Father arrested in infant death in Lopatcong Township

LOPATCONG TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Phillipsburg man has been arrested in connection with the death of his 2-month-old daughter following a 14-month investigation.

James A. Capo Jr., 39, of Phillipsburg, was arrested Tuesday and charged with homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.

On April 17 at approximately 2:10 p.m., officers from the Lopatcong Township Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of Youngs Road for the report of an unresponsive 2-month-old infant who had reportedly fallen from a baby rocker.

Upon arrival, officers initiated lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Emergency medical services personnel transported the infant, Sophia Capo, to St. Luke’s Hospital-Warren Campus.

Due to the severity of her condition, she was later airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for advanced medical treatment.

She succumbed to her injuries on April 24.

The preliminary autopsy report determined the cause of death as “Blunt Injury of Head” and the manner of death as “Homicide.”

Capo was charged with homicide, a first-degree crime, and endangering the welfare of a child, a second-degree crime.

He was processed and lodged in the Warren County Correctional Center, pending his first appearance in Warren County Superior Court.

Homicide carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Second-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Lopatcong Township Police Department and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, with assistance from the Warren County Regional Crime Scene Team.
