SPRINGFIELD, MA — Members of the Springfield Firearms Investigation Unit seized a loaded large capacity firearm and arrested a suspect with several prior firearm and drug convictions on Thursday.
Joshua Acevedo, 24, of Springfield, was taken into custody around 11:15 a.m. on the 400 block of Cooley Street.
FIU Detectives had been investigating a drug distribution operation involving Acevedo for several weeks under the direction of Captain Christopher Collins.
During the investigation, Detectives received information that Acevedo possessed a firearm.
Detectives were also aware that Acevedo had an active arrest warrant for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon stemming from an alleged assault that happened in May 2026.
On Thursday, Detectives observed Acevedo leave his home on the 500 block of Canon Circle in a vehicle.
Detectives were aware that Acevedo’s driver’s license is currently suspended.
Once Acevedo parked on Cooley Street, Detectives approached him and placed him under arrest for the outstanding warrant.
Inside the vehicle, Detectives recovered a loaded large capacity firearm capable of holding 17 rounds of ammunition, a second large capacity firearm magazine and marijuana.
Detectives then applied for and were granted a search warrant for his home on Canon Circle.
During the search, additional ammunition and a third firearm magazine were seized.
Detectives also recovered $936 in cash.
Acevedo was convicted in 2022 in Franklin Superior Court on firearm charges.
He was also convicted in Hampden Superior Court in 2022 on firearm and drug charges.
Acevedo is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, firearm violation with three prior violent/drug crimes, possession of ammunition without an FID card, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug, 209 violation and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Members of the Massachusetts State Police VFAS and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.
