NEWPORT — Sarah Roy, the longtime girls basketball coach at North Country Union High School, has been elected president of the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association, the organization announced.
Roy, who also serves as North Country’s student engagement coordinator, has spent the past five years on the association’s board of directors and steps into the leadership role after building one of the most successful high school programs in the state.
“I am incredibly honored to represent the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association as the next president,” Roy said in a statement, adding that the group’s mission of mentorship, sportsmanship and accountability supports “the development of our next generation of student-athletes.”
At North Country, Roy has compiled a 110-17 record from 2021 to 2026, including an undefeated 24-0 season in 2023. Her teams won Vermont Division II state championships in 2021 and 2023, reached four Division II title games and advanced to a Division I Final Four this year. She was named the association’s Division II girls coach of the year in 2023 and 2025 and has earned league coach of the year honors in both the Lake League and Capital League.
A graduate of Lyndon State College with a degree in physical education and teacher education, Roy has also shaped the game in the Northeast Kingdom beyond the high school level. She founded and has coached Kingdom Storm AAU Basketball for 20 years, directs the Legacy Basketball Camp and serves as referee coordinator for North Country Junior Hoops.
In her new role, Roy said she hopes to “bridge our strong foundation of tradition with the modern era” while working with coaches across the state.
“Together, we will continue to evolve, innovate, and provide every student-athlete with opportunities and the best possible environment to grow, both on and off the court,” she said.
The association, based in Lyndonville, operates under the motto “Making Basketball Better in Vermont.”
