SUV strikes street sweeper, flips over in Stetson

STETSON, ME — A crash involving an SUV and a street sweeper briefly closed Route 222 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report of the crash at 1:25 p.m. in the area of 796 Village Road.

Authorities said a small SUV heading toward Newport came up behind a street sweeper that was cleaning the breakdown lane.

The SUV struck the street sweeper, causing the SUV to flip over and come to rest in the roadway.

The two occupants of the SUV were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the street sweeper was not injured.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with the Levant Fire Department, Hermon Fire Department and Northern Light Ambulance.

The Maine Department of Transportation and Maine Department of Environmental Protection assisted with cleanup at the crash scene.
