Kia stolen, Hyundai vandalized in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Police are investigating the theft of a Kia and an attempted theft of a Hyundai that occurred overnight on Lee Park Avenue.

A 2018 burgundy Kia Optima was reported stolen from 102 Lee Park Ave. at 6:38 a.m. Friday.

The vehicle was last seen at 9 p.m. Thursday and is believed to have been stolen between midnight and 4 a.m. Friday.

Entry was gained through a broken window, according to Officer 3718.

In a second incident reported at 8:55 a.m. Friday, a black 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE was vandalized at 140 Lee Park Ave.

The vehicle’s rear passenger side window was smashed and the steering column was broken near the ignition in an apparent theft attempt, Officer 3730 reported.

The Hyundai was last seen at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the proximity of the two incidents and similar overnight timelines indicate they may have been committed by the same suspect or suspects.

Both Kia and Hyundai models are frequently targeted by thieves.

The Hanover Township Police Department provides steering wheel lockout kits to owners of these vehicle types.
