PARSIPPANY, NJ — A structure fire was reported at about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday at Building 46 of the Knoll Gardens Apartment Complex in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany, police said.
The Parsippany Police Department said its communications center was notified by the Montville Police Department’s communications center after Montville received a 911 call reporting the fire.
Officers responded and were told there was an active fire in the building’s crawl space, police said.
Maintenance personnel and officers safely evacuated the area.
Responding firefighters extinguished the fire, police said.
Because of the fire and the subsequent disconnection of utilities, the building was deemed uninhabitable, according to police.
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist displaced residents as needed.
Police said all six Parsippany fire districts responded, along with Parsippany Rescue and Recovery, Par-Troy EMS and both Parsippany volunteer EMS squads.
Mutual aid was provided by the Boonton, Whippany, Denville, Montville and Morris Plains fire departments, police said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
