Sex offender notification issued in Warwick

WARWICK, RI — Police have issued a community notification regarding a Level III high-risk sex offender residing in the city.

Wayne A. Freitas, 65, of Warwick, is living in the area of 20 Jefferson Blvd., according to the Warwick Police Department.

Freitas was convicted in 2000 in Massachusetts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, police said.

He was convicted in Rhode Island in 2019 of second-degree sexual assault involving a 40-year-old female, according to police.

Freitas was also convicted of failure to register as a sex offender in Rhode Island in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, twice in 2017, and in 2024, 2025 and 2026, police said.

His probation expires Oct. 28, 2034, and he is subject to lifetime registration, according to police.

The notification was issued under the state’s Sexual Offender Registration and Community Notification Act, which allows law enforcement to inform the public when officials determine such disclosure will enhance public safety.

Freitas is not wanted by police and has served the sentence imposed by the court, police said.

Police warned that abuse of the information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered offenders will not be tolerated and may constitute a crime.
