Fire damages mixed-use buildings in Perth Amboy

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — Firefighters battled a blaze that damaged two mixed-use buildings on Smith Street on Sunday afternoon.

The Perth Amboy Fire Department was dispatched to 183 Smith Street at 4:07 p.m. for a reported building fire.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke throughout the second floor apartments of 183 and 187 Smith Street with fire venting from the rear of the two-story structures.

Command transmitted an additional alarm as firefighters went to work.

Four hoselines operated to contain and extinguish the fire while searches and ventilation were completed on all floors of both buildings.

No injuries were reported.

Several stores on the ground level sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the PAFD Fire Investigation Unit.

All occupants are being assisted by the city’s relocation officers and the Red Cross.

Perth Amboy units on scene included E-1, E-3, E-4, T-2, T-3, R-1, C-1, C-2, C-4, C-5 and C-10.

Mutual aid was provided by Woodbridge Truck 1, Hopelawn Rescue 8 and Iselin Air Unit 9-3-4.

South Amboy and Sayreville covered the city during the incident.
