HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — Hackettstown police arrested a Budd Lake man on credit card theft charges following an investigation into unauthorized transactions at a Mountain Avenue convenience store.

Richard Exner, 39, of Budd Lake, was arrested April 7 after an investigation revealed he allegedly used a customer’s bank card that had been left at QuickChek at 134 Mountain Ave.

Police responded to the store at approximately 12:15 p.m. following a report of a possible theft involving a misplaced bank card.

The customer had accidentally left her TD Bank card at the store on March 27, and management secured it in the store safe.

When the customer retrieved the card on April 1, she discovered multiple unauthorized transactions, including purchases from eBay and Bowling.com.

Detectives identified a suspect through review of financial records and a store inquiry.

The suspect later admitted to making several of the unauthorized purchases, police said.

Exner was charged with theft of credit cards and fraudulent use of credit cards.

He was processed and released pending a court appearance.
