Two arrested for smuggling contraband into Springfield prison

SPRINGFIELD, VT — Vermont State Police arrested three people after corrections officers intercepted contraband being smuggled into the Southern State Correctional Facility on April 26, 2026.

The Vermont Department of Corrections notified state police that officers had interdicted a suspicious item transported into the facility during visiting hours.

An investigation revealed that Grace Cookson, 73, of Cabot, and Daniel A. Abbott Sr., 52, of Cabot, attempted to smuggle marijuana to Daniel A. Abbott Jr., 33, of Springfield, who is an inmate at the facility.

Cookson was issued a citation for transportation of contraband into a place of detention and false reports to law enforcement authorities.

Abbott Sr. was issued a citation for transportation of contraband into a place of detention.

Abbott Jr. was issued a citation for transportation of contraband into a place of detention and possession of cannabis.
