FORT COVINGTON, NY — New York State Police arrested a Fort Covington man on May 3, 2026, charging him with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Driving While Intoxicated.
Mathew D. Walter, 31, of Fort Covington, was taken into custody following a domestic dispute on Burns Holden Road.
Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 7:57 p.m. after receiving a report of a domestic dispute.
An investigation determined that Walter and the victim were involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation.
The victim reported that Walter was intoxicated and behaving aggressively and did not want him inside the residence.
During the incident, Walter forced his way into the residence and entered a room where children were present, locking the door behind him.
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrived on scene and were able to safely remove Walter from the room and secure the children.
Walter was detained by Border Patrol agents and subsequently turned over to New York State Police.
Further investigation revealed that Walter had operated a 2011 GMC pickup truck to the residence.
While speaking with troopers, Walter exhibited signs of intoxication.
Troopers attempted to administer Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which Walter refused.
He was transported to SP Malone, where he provided a breath sample registering a blood alcohol content of 0.16%.
Walter was processed and released on appearance tickets, returnable to the Town of Fort Covington Court at a later date in May 2026.
The DWI charge indicates a previous conviction.
