Woman arrested on welfare fraud charges in Canisteo

CANISTEO, NY — A woman was arrested on welfare fraud and larceny charges following an investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

Melissa D. Aldrich, 36, of Canisteo, was arrested May 5, 2026.

Investigators allege that from Jan. 1, 2024, to June 15, 2024, Aldrich failed to report income and allowed an unauthorized person to use her EBT card.

She received benefits from the Steuben County Department of Social Services totaling $2,916.46 that she was not eligible to receive, according to authorities.

Aldrich is charged with welfare fraud in the fourth degree, a class E felony, grand larceny in the fourth degree, a class E felony, and misuse of food stamps.

She was released on an appearance ticket to return to the Village of Bath Court.
