HOLLIDAYSBURG, PA — The Blair County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent the agency.
Sheriff James E. Ott said scammers are using the names of real Sheriff’s Office employees to make their calls sound legitimate.
The scammers also reference current sitting judges on fake warrants, according to the alert issued Tuesday.
The callers may claim the victim missed jury duty, has a warrant or owes fines, Ott said.
They may demand payment via gift cards or wire transfers, or ask for personal information.
The Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand money or payment over the phone, according to the alert.
Residents who receive a suspicious call should hang up immediately and not give out any personal or financial information.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to report such calls to local law enforcement.
