SUMMIT, NJ — A Philadelphia man was arrested early Saturday morning following a burglary at a bicycle shop on Springfield Avenue, police said.

Joseph Holman, 46, of Philadelphia, was taken into custody at approximately 6:22 a.m. Saturday after a 27-hour investigation by the Summit Police Department’s Detective Bureau.

Officers initially responded to a business on the 300 block of Springfield Avenue at approximately 3:04 a.m. Friday for an activated commercial burglar alarm.

Upon arrival, officers found the front door ajar with shattered glass on the ground and the audible alarm sounding.

A check of the premises and surrounding area did not locate a suspect, but surveillance footage was obtained from a business representative.

The footage showed the suspect first arrived in the area at approximately 2:32 a.m., looking into the store from outside.

The suspect was seen riding a 2026 black Trek FX+1S bicycle, which had been previously stolen from Pennsylvania and was recovered during the investigation.

The perpetrator returned at approximately 2:57 a.m. on foot and entered the store at approximately 2:58 a.m. by breaking the glass of the front door with a sledgehammer.

Once inside, the suspect retrieved a light blue Specialized Vado 5.0 bicycle valued at $4,999.99 and exited within a minute before riding toward Springfield Avenue.

Holman resisted officers during the arrest process, police said.

He was charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking, unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, hindering prosecution, possession of burglar tools, receiving stolen property, weapon possession for unlawful purpose, certain persons not to have weapons and criminal mischief.

Holman also had two active NCIC warrants, including one for escaping custody.

Following processing, Holman was transported to Essex County Jail where he will be held until his detention hearing.
