UNION, NY — The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal house fire that claimed the life of an 86-year-old woman early Thursday morning.
Deputies and numerous local fire departments responded to a house fire at 803 Hill Ave. in the Town of Union around 1 a.m. on April 22, 2026.
Upon arrival, responders found the fire encompassing the house, requiring additional fire department support.
After extinguishing the fire, a victim was located inside the residence, deceased.
The deceased victim was identified as Joyce E. Bassos, 86, of Union.
There were no other occupants in the residence.
Broome County Emergency Services Fire Investigators and the Sheriff’s Office Detective Division responded to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.
The preliminary investigation does not indicate any criminal action.
The following agencies responded to the fire: Union Center Fire Department, Endwell Fire Department, West Corners Fire Department, Maine Fire Department, Vestal Fire Department, Union Emergency Medical Services, Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Fire Investigators and Broome County Sheriff’s Detective Division.
