ANSONIA, CT — Police discovered 39 dogs, two ferrets and five people living in unsanitary conditions at a residence on Schumacher Drive on April 23, 2026.
Officers obtained a search warrant after receiving a complaint of possible animal cruelty and unsanitary living conditions, according to the Ansonia Police Department.
Inside the home, investigators found two adult females and three juveniles, ages 15, 5 and 2, living among garbage, animal feces and urine throughout the house.
The Ansonia Building Inspector condemned the residence, deeming the living conditions unsanitary and unsafe.
An initial examination showed the dogs to be healthy, but all animals will be checked by a veterinarian to ensure they have not been neglected.
The Department of Children and Families assisted in the investigation and transported the juveniles to a local hospital for evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing.
Woodbridge Animal Control and the Town of Oxford assisted in the case.
