TRENTON, NJ — A 45-year-old man has been charged with seven counts of theft of a motor vehicle following an investigation into a pattern of vehicle thefts in the city.

Walter Mason, of Ewing, was identified as the suspect after Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives investigated thefts that occurred during February and March.

In each case, a tow truck was observed on surveillance footage backing up to victims’ vehicles and towing them without the owners’ permission, according to Det. Lt. David Ordille, public information officer for the Criminal Investigation Bureau’s Major Crimes Section.

Detectives tracked the tow truck’s path of travel to a local scrap yard where the cars were turned over and crushed.

Detectives used various investigative techniques and leads to identify Mason as the suspect.

Mason was born Nov. 23, 1980.
