CVS impersonation scam reported in Manchester

1 min read

MANCHESTER, VT — The Manchester Police Department is warning residents about fraudulent callers impersonating CVS Caremark and CVS Pharmacy to steal personal information.

The scammers are attempting to obtain Medicare numbers, Social Security numbers and credit card details by claiming to verify prescriptions, offer free shipping or update customer profiles, according to police.

The callers use spoofed phone numbers to appear legitimate.

Police advise anyone receiving a suspicious call to hang up immediately and call the official number on the back of their prescription card at 1-800-552-8159 to verify.

Signs of a scam call include requests for sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, Medicare information or financial details to “verify a prescription” or “update records.”

Scammers may offer free shipping or request payment for fake, “overdue” prescriptions.

Some callers use intimidation tactics, mentioning a lawsuit involving the victim’s Social Security number or claiming they are overdue for a medication refill.

Caller ID may appear as “Unknown,” “CVSKmart” or a generic “pharmacy,” though caller IDs can be spoofed to appear legitimate.
