Fatal UTV crash investigated in Rupert

RUPERT, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a fatal utility terrain vehicle crash that occurred on Suncrest Road on April 18.

Troopers were dispatched at approximately 8:25 p.m. to a reported ATV crash with serious injuries.

Upon arrival, rescue and fire personnel were working to extricate one of the occupants from a CF Moto 1000 XL that had rolled over an embankment after leaving the roadway and striking several trees.

The investigation determined there were five total occupants in the six-passenger vehicle.

A 13-year-old juvenile sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where the juvenile remains hospitalized.

A 15-year-old juvenile was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries and was later released.

Tammy Bice, 43, of West Pawlet, was transported to Albany Medical Center for severe injuries and remains hospitalized.

David McGuire, 39, of Maine, died on scene from his injuries during extrication.

The operator, Ellsworth A. Reed, 33, of West Pawlet, was suspected to be under the influence of intoxicants and was taken into custody.

Reed was charged with DUI with death resulting and remanded to the Marble Valley Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail.

Reed was arraigned at Bennington County Superior Court, Criminal Division on April 20 at 12:30 p.m.

The Honorable Judge John Valente imposed bail and conditions of release.

Seatbelts were reportedly being used at the time of the crash.
