Underage drinking violations found in Binghamton bar checks

BINGHAMTON, NY — Binghamton police charged eight people with underage drinking violations during compliance checks at downtown bars and taverns early April 12.

Officers from the patrol division, Community Response Team and detective bureau conducted the checks between 12 a.m. and 2:10 a.m. at nine licensed establishments in the downtown area.

Police found violations at two locations during the operation.

At The Grove Restaurant and Bar on Court Street, officers charged six people with unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage with intent to consume by persons under 21.

The charges included a 19-year-old male, two 20-year-old females, a 20-year-old male, a 17-year-old male and another 19-year-old male.

Two of those charged also face additional violations for attempting to purchase alcohol through fraudulent means.

The 20-year-old male was also charged with criminal impersonation in the second degree.

At Tom and Marty’s Town House on State Street, police charged one 19-year-old male with unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage with intent to consume by persons under 21.

Seven other establishments checked showed no violations, while two locations were closed at the time of the checks.

All establishments had been previously notified by police that unannounced compliance checks would be conducted.

The Special Investigations Unit will continue the investigation with assistance from the New York State Liquor Authority for any additional violations.
