Man charged with murder in Binghamton stabbing

BINGHAMTON, NY — A 54-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing early Thursday morning.

Binghamton police officers were dispatched to 29 Virgil Street at approximately 12:00 a.m. after Broome County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting that someone had been stabbed inside the housing facility.

Officers found a person in the common stairwell who had sustained a significant stab wound to the abdomen.

Officers rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived and continued life-saving measures.

The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Through investigation, police learned that the suspect, identified as Roy A. Peterson of Binghamton, remained inside an apartment within the facility.

Officers located the apartment and took Peterson into custody.

Police said the suspect and victim were known to one another.

The victim succumbed to their injuries at approximately 2:30 a.m. while at the hospital.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time.

Peterson was charged with murder in the second degree, a Class A-I felony.

He was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and remanded to the custody of the Broome County Correctional Facility.
