BATH, NY — Members of the Village of Bath Police Department were dispatched to the Super 8 Motel on West Morris Street on March 26, 2026, at approximately 12:33 a.m. for the report of a guest making threats with a knife and damaging property inside a room.

Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the guest, Joseph L. Nichols, 45, of Corning.

Upon making contact with Nichols, officers observed that multiple items inside the room were damaged and that he was in possession of a knife.

Officers observed that the television screen had been shattered, the furnace ripped off the wall, multiple holes in the wall, the glass window broken, and a microwave was damaged by being thrown out the window.

Nichols was persuaded to put down the knife and was taken into custody without incident.

Nichols is charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a class E felony, and was released on an appearance ticket returnable to Bath Village Court at a later date.

The Village of Bath Police Department was assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.
