ELKINS PARK, PA — Abington Township police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a shooting that occurred March 22.
Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Cadwalader Avenue at approximately 8:15 p.m. for reports of gunfire.
Several callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and observing a large group fleeing from the area of the basketball court behind the McKinley Firehouse.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a large group had been gathered near the basketball court.
As a vehicle traveled northbound on Cadwalader Avenue, a male from the group ran into the parking lot of the McKinley Firehouse, retrieved a firearm, and discharged multiple rounds at the passing vehicle.
It is unknown at this time if the vehicle was struck by gunfire, but an occupied home in the 300 block of Cadwalader Avenue was struck by one of the rounds.
Investigation by the Abington Township Police Department led to the shooter being identified as Jamell Whitmore, 18, of King of Prussia.
A warrant was obtained for Whitmore’s arrest, and this information was shared with the Upper Merion Police Department.
On March 26, Whitmore was arrested by the Upper Merion Police Department as he attempted to enter his home.
Custody of Whitmore was transferred to the Abington Township Police Department, and he was transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
On March 27, Whitmore was arraigned by District Justice Maurice Saylor and bail was set at $500,000 cash.
