Chamber executive arrested on theft charges in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM, NY — State Police arrested a Canajoharie woman on March 20, 2026, for allegedly stealing more than $475,000 from two organizations she oversaw.

Marybeth C. Shults, 32, was charged with grand larceny 2nd, possession of a forged instrument 1st and falsifying business records 1st.

Troopers began investigating suspicious bank activity in Amsterdam on Feb. 26.

The investigation determined that Shults, the executive director of the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chambers of Commerce, allegedly used more than $160,000 belonging to the Promote Gloversville Development Corporation to pay a personal debt on a residence in February.

During the crime, she reportedly falsified the required authorizing signatures to transfer the large sum of money.

Further investigation determined that from July 2025 until February, Shults allegedly made numerous additional purchases using funds belonging to the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chambers of Commerce, resulting in the theft of more than $315,000.

Those purchases included a vehicle down payment, an agricultural tractor, an agricultural wagon, multiple snowmobiles, an all-terrain vehicle and a utility task vehicle.

All purchased items were determined to be for Shults’s personal use and personal gain.

None of the purchases were known or approved by members of the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chambers of Commerce.

State Police conducted the investigation with assistance from the New York State Comptroller’s Office.

Shults was arrested at her home and transported to State Police Fonda for processing.

She was arraigned at Amsterdam Town Court and released on her own recognizance.
