LOWELL, ME — A Lowell man was arrested for operating under the influence after deputies responded to a family fight on the evening of Feb. 21.
At approximately 7:45 p.m., the Penobscot County Regional Communication Center received a report that William Smith, 48, of Lowell, was intoxicated and destroying property at a residence in the town.
Before deputies arrived, Smith left the scene, and it was believed he may have had a firearm in his possession.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that Smith had caused damage to the home and made threats to retrieve a firearm.
A witness later found all three of Smith’s firearms on the property—two handguns on the garage floor and a rifle in the driveway snow.
While deputies spoke with witnesses, they heard a pickup truck engine and observed a white pickup traveling toward them on West Old Main Road.
Witnesses confirmed the driver was Smith.
Deputies located the truck stuck in a snowbank at the intersection of Lowell Road and Cedar Rest Road, and Smith was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division initiated the Extreme Risk Protection Order (Yellow Flag) process, and Smith’s firearms were removed from the residence.
Smith was released on bail from Penobscot County Jail on Feb. 22.
