Fatal fire under investigation in South Plainfield

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — Authorities are investigating a fire that killed one person early Thursday morning.

At approximately 4:54 a.m. on Feb. 4, 2026, first responders were dispatched to a residence on Cedarbrook Avenue following a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, responders found an unresponsive adult male upstairs.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other adult residents escaped with minor injuries.

Three first responders sustained minor injuries as a result of the fire and were treated and released.

The cause of death remains undetermined pending completion of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire is not suspicious in nature.

The investigation by the county and state fire marshal is ongoing.
