ROCHELLE PARK, NJ — A Westfield man has been arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual contact.
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Michael W. Smith, 41, of Westfield.
The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Rochelle Park Police Department, under the direction of Chief Dean Pinto.
On Sunday, Jan. 18, the Rochelle Park Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding an alleged sexual assault.
An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Rochelle Park Police Department revealed that Smith sexually assaulted an adult victim in Rochelle Park.
On Thursday, Jan. 29, Smith was arrested in Westfield and charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact.
Smith was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
