ROSELLE, NJ — Police are investigating criminal mischief after a water pipe was deliberately damaged at Home Terrace Park on Dec. 7.
Roselle Police Officers responded to the park at approximately 4:44 p.m. after water was observed flowing across the roadway and creating a potential hazard to motorists.
The Roselle Fire Department was already on scene and successfully shut off the water source.
A Department of Public Works Supervisor also responded to assess the situation and address any immediate repairs necessary to protect the system and ensure public safety.
During the follow-up investigation, it was determined that a security cage protecting an above-ground water connection at the park was unsecured and showed signs consistent with tampering.
Further inspection revealed that the center section of the pipe had been removed.
The Department of Public Works consulted with the contractor responsible for construction of the new playground and installation of the water system.
The removed section of pipe was examined and determined not to have failed due to freezing temperatures.
The damage was assessed as being consistent with damage caused by a cutting instrument.
Prior to the arrival of first responders, an individual was present at the location recording video of the water spraying.
That individual later advised officers that they did not contact the police and was showing his child the new park before beginning to record the water spraying.
The Roselle Police Department is actively pursuing all investigative leads and will seek charges against those responsible.
Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Roselle Police Department Detective Bureau at 908-245-9200.
