Man charged with assault, weapon possession in Bath

BATH, NY — Members of the Village of Bath Police Department and Bath Ambulance responded to an unknown medical alarm at a residence on Geneva Street on Jan. 13, 2026.

Upon arrival, officers observed suspicious behavior among occupants of the residence and observed a female with severe wounds running from the residence seeking help.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that a violent domestic incident had occurred, during which the victim had been severely beaten and stabbed.

The suspect, Dennis L. Smigiel, 42, of Bath, was quickly located and taken into custody.

Smigiel was charged with one count of assault in the second degree, a class D felony, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony.

Additional charges are expected.

Smigiel was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment where he remains held without bail.

Smigiel is a four time convicted felon in the State of New York.

The victim was provided medical care and is recovering.
