Sheriff’s deputies respond to threat at school in Old Town

OLD TOWN, ME — Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Old Town Elementary School on the morning of Jan. 21, 2026, following a reported threat.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office received a call for assistance from Old Town Police at approximately 8 a.m. concerning a potential critical incident at the school.

Deputies, along with Maine State Police and local agencies, mobilized to the scene.

An early investigation determined the threat was non-credible, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The school was placed in lockdown during the response.

Law enforcement officers remained on site as the lockdown was lifted and the school returned to its regular schedule.

School counselors were made available to students upon request.

Officers planned to remain present during afternoon dismissal times.

Old Town Police and the school are conducting an investigation into the source of the threat.
