EAST HANOVER, NJ — Police are investigating an attempted vehicle theft on Garden Street early Thursday morning in which suspects targeted key fobs but were deterred by homeowners and officers.
Patrols responded and deployed a drone unit to search the area, according to police Chief Christopher F. Cannizzo and Acting Chief Christopher J. Berres.
The suspects fled without stealing any vehicles, police said.
Investigators determined the suspects’ vehicle was spotted in several surrounding towns after leaving East Hanover.
Police said they are concerned that specific vehicles, including Land Rovers and BMWs, are being intentionally targeted by organized theft crews operating throughout the region.
Many nearby municipalities are experiencing similar increases in occupied burglaries and vehicle thefts, according to police.
The crimes are often carried out quickly and with prior knowledge of vehicle locations, police said.
Police are urging residents to lock all vehicle and home doors, activate alarm systems nightly, park BMWs in garages when possible and use exterior lighting and cameras.
Residents are asked to report suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.
The East Hanover Police Department has implemented enhanced measures including increased patrols and special enforcement details.
The department continues to work with local, county, state and federal law enforcement partners through intelligence-led policing and real-time information sharing.
