Man charged in shooting in Boonton

BOONTON, NJ — A Georgia man has been charged in connection with a Christmas Eve shooting that left a woman injured.

Jovan Young, 37, of Jonesboro, Georgia, faces multiple charges after a woman was found with a gunshot wound on Dec. 24.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. that day, the woman was discovered lying in the fetal position on the side of the road at the intersection of Old Boonton Road and Pocono Road in Denville.

She had an apparent gunshot wound to her abdomen and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

An investigation revealed the woman had been with Young earlier in the day.

Both the victim and Young are from Georgia but have ties to New Jersey.

On Dec. 25, law enforcement officers located Young in Boonton.

Officers recovered a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines loaded with hollow point cartridges when Young was apprehended.

Young was charged and transported to Morris County Correctional Facility, pending future court proceedings pursuant to the Criminal Justice Reform Act.

As of Dec. 27, Young has been charged with third-degree endangering an injured person; second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose; second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon; fourth-degree possession of hollow point cartridges; and fourth-degree certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition.

The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
