Suspect arrested in fraud scheme in Keyport

KEYPORT, NJ — A Jersey City man has been arrested in connection with a fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded victims across the United States of more than $1 million.

Hriday Arya was arrested Nov. 18 by Keyport police detectives and the U.S. Marshals Service in Jersey City.

The investigation began Sept. 18 when Detective Vito Koempel Jr. responded to Keyport Police Headquarters to investigate a reported fraud.

A 75-year-old Keyport woman had allegedly been defrauded of more than $36,000 in cash, and the scammers had obtained her personal identifying information.

During the investigation, Detective Koempel identified Arya as a suspect.

Evidence indicates that within a one-month period, Arya may have defrauded numerous individuals across the United States of more than $1 million.

A warrant was issued for Arya’s arrest Oct. 14.

Detectives developed information indicating that Arya was possibly located in Jersey City.

Detective Koempel and Detective Ferm, in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service, located and arrested Arya without incident.

Arya was transported to Keyport Police Headquarters, where he was processed and subsequently lodged at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.
