WAYLAND, MA — Police are investigating a racially motivated act targeting a student at Wayland High School.
A parent notified Wayland Police at about 8:30 a.m. Friday that their child had been targeted by what appeared to be a racially motivated act on school grounds.
Police immediately launched an investigation following department policies and procedures for responding to hate-based incidents and involved the department’s Civil Rights Officer.
The department contacted the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and the Director of Racial Justice Initiatives is supporting the student.
Those believed to be involved have been identified, and appropriate investigative steps are underway in accordance with the law and school policies.
The District Attorney’s Office is planning to schedule a community conversation about the incident next week.
Police have notified the Anti-Defamation League, which will support the department and community members during the investigation.
Police Chief Ed Burman said the incident is deeply troubling and the department’s priority is the safety and well-being of the student and the community.
