CRANFORD, NJ — Police are investigating a residential burglary and attempted motor vehicle theft that occurred early Sunday morning.
Officers were dispatched to a Glenwood Road residence at approximately 4:57 a.m. Oct. 19 for a report of a burglary.
Responding officers determined that three suspects had entered the home and were walking around inside while residents were present.
A dog began barking, causing the three suspects to flee in a dark, mid-sized sedan, possibly a BMW, according to police.
The residents had a BMW parked on the property at the time of the incident.
A patrol unit later located a dark BMW matching the suspect vehicle description on Columbia Avenue, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.
A resident on Dunham Avenue subsequently reported that their BMW was entered overnight.
Surveillance video showed what appears to be the same suspect BMW pulling up to the victim’s vehicle at the time of the burglary.
The Cranford Police Department and other surrounding agencies within Union County have seen an increase in high-end vehicles being targeted by thieves.
Police are asking residents to remove key fobs from vehicles when parked and to ensure security cameras are operational.
