LOWELL — A juvenile male has been identified as the individual reported to be brandishing a firearm Tuesday in Lowell that prompted a large police response.
The firearm, which is confirmed to be an airsoft replica weapon, has been recovered.
On Sept. 3, just before 2:30 p.m., the Lowell Police Department received a report of an individual possibly armed with a firearm.
Patrol officers immediately responded and began to search the area.
The Lowell Police Department Unmanned Aircraft System was deployed as well as the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing.
Numerous Police K9s, Massachusetts State Police Troopers, the NEMLEC Swat Team, UMass Lowell Police, LNHP Law Enforcement Rangers, the FBI, and ATF also responded to assist.
Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident while patrol officers continued securing the area throughout the night.
“The safety of this city, and its residents and visitors, is our top priority,” said Superintendent Greg Hudon.
“The extensive response of personnel and assets by this department and our law enforcement partners was a testament to that commitment.”
Hudon thanked officers and partners for their response as well as investigators for their work that brought closure to the incident.
He especially thanked residents of the affected neighborhood for their cooperation and understanding while the incident unfolded.
“While the reported firearm in this case was ultimately determined to be an airsoft gun, our community can be certain that, as in this case, the Lowell Police Department will always utilize all available resources until the safety of all involved is assured,” Hudon said.
