2 arrested after fleeing traffic stop, crashing in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS — Two people were arrested Aug. 24 after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing on Swanton Road, according to the St. Albans Police Department.

Police received a report regarding drug activity within the town and located a vehicle related to the complaint.

Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop on the vehicle with a narcotic K9 on scene to assist with the investigation.

The vehicle’s occupants were identified as Jose Coiscou-Mercedes, 24, of Staten Island, N.Y., and Brandy Perez, 21, of Springfield, Mass.

During the stop, the vehicle drove away and continued to elude officers in a gross and negligent manner.

The operator was unable to maintain control of the fleeing vehicle and crashed near the intersection of Franklin Park West.

Both occupants fled from the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.

Officers quickly apprehended Coiscou-Mercedes and Perez.

A search of the area located a loaded firearm that had been discarded by the occupants while fleeing on foot.

Coiscou-Mercedes is being held at Northwest State Correctional Facility without bail and is scheduled to appear in Franklin County Superior Court on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.

He faces charges of eluding a police officer while operating in a grossly negligent manner, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident.

Perez is being held at Northwest State Correctional Facility without bail and is scheduled to appear in Franklin County Superior Court on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.

She faces charges of possession of cocaine and resisting arrest.
