Brooklyn man arrested on drug charges after car fire on I-278

BROOKLYN — Troopers from Troop NYC, SP Brooklyn, arrested Derrick Braithwaite, age 29, of Brooklyn, on Aug. 11 for multiple drug and fraud charges.

Braithwaite faces charges including criminal possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, a class A felony, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, a class C felony, possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, a class D felony, and tampering with evidence, a class E felony, among other charges.

Troopers were on patrol on I-278 East at Exit 27, Atlantic Avenue, when they observed a black Mercedes C300 on fire in the right shoulder.

The troopers stopped to assist FDNY and maintain traffic control.

The motorist identified himself as Derick Baker with a Connecticut driver’s license.

Through a roadside investigation, troopers determined the Connecticut license was fraudulent.

When questioned about the contents of his bag, Braithwaite fled on foot into oncoming traffic.

After a brief foot pursuit, Braithwaite was safely apprehended.

He was found to be in possession of hallucinogenics, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, as well as fraudulent registration on his vehicle.

Braithwaite was transported to the NYPD 76th precinct for processing, and then lodged in Brooklyn Central Bookings to be arraigned at a later date.
