Springport man charged with assault after punching deputy during overdose response

SPRINGPORT — A 46-year-old man has been charged with second-degree assault and other offenses after punching a deputy in the face during an overdose response on Aug. 2.

Randy A. Grader was arrested at approximately 11:52 p.m. on Cross Road, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Deputies and New York State Police troopers responded to the address at approximately 11:39 p.m. for an overdose complaint.

Upon arrival, officers observed Grader lying on the ground in what appeared to be a hallucinatory state of mind.

While officers were gathering information, Grader became aggressive, stood up, and punched a deputy on the left side of his face, causing the deputy to fall to the ground and become disoriented.

Grader was charged with second-degree assault, a felony; third-degree menacing, a misdemeanor; resisting arrest, a misdemeanor; and obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor.

The deputy was transported to Auburn Community Hospital by Fleming Ambulance, where he was treated and released a few hours later.

Grader was also transported to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was treated for the overdose and released.

Grader was then brought to Cayuga County Jail for court appearance, where he was remanded without bail.

The sheriff’s office thanked the New York State Police, Fleming Fire Department, Union Springs Fire Department, Cayuga County E-911 Center and Auburn Community Hospital staff for their assistance.
