TRUMBULL — The Trumbull Police Department is working to identify and apprehend suspects responsible for recent car thefts and break-ins, officials said Monday.
Police have recovered one stolen vehicle and are working to recover others taken from homes, according to a department statement.
The department is asking residents to lock vehicle doors and remove keys, key fobs and valuables from cars.
Residents should also remove garage remote controls from vehicles, police said.
Officials are urging residents to report suspicious activity immediately rather than waiting.
Police cannot pursue vehicles that fail to stop due to legal restrictions, but other methods have successfully led to apprehensions during and after crimes, the department said.
The department has added additional patrols operating 24 hours a day and is using detectives and other agencies as assistance.
Similar crimes are occurring in many area towns and throughout the state, police said.
Chief Michael Lombardo said he communicates regularly with First Selectman Vicki A. Tesoro about public safety concerns and strategies.
Car break-ins during the first six months of this year dropped 34% compared to the same period in 2024, according to police data.
Since 2020, Trumbull has seen a 54% reduction in vehicle break-ins when compared to 2024, police said.
