OSWEGATCHIE — New York State Police have arrested a 34-year-old Ogdensburg man in connection with a fatal collision between a pickup truck and an Amish buggy that occurred in December 2023.
Clark J. Zanker was charged July 7 with criminal negligent homicide and third-degree assault stemming from the Dec. 11, 2023, crash on State Highway 812.
Police responded to the collision at 7:04 a.m. that day and found a 2007 Dodge pickup truck and a demolished Amish buggy with two ejected passengers on the side of the roadway.
An investigation determined Zanker was traveling south on State Highway 812 when he failed to observe the Amish buggy in the same lane of travel, striking it from behind.
Abraham Shetler, 21, of Heuvelton, was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts by Heuvelton Fire and Rescue.
Joseph Yoder, 21, of Lisbon, was transported to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center and later to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for life-threatening injuries.
Zanker was arraigned in the Town of Gouverneur Court and released on his own recognizance.
