STETSON — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an explosion Monday that destroyed a camper and sparked a fire that threatened nearby woods.
The Stetson Fire Department responded to a report of black smoke and an explosion at 301 Coboro Road at approximately 2:08 p.m. July 7.
Residents at the property had placed Tannerite, a binary explosive often used for target shooting, inside an old camper located behind the house.
The Tannerite was detonated, causing the camper to explode.
The blast triggered a fire that threatened nearby woods, but responding fire units were able to extinguish it before it spread.
No injuries were reported.
Stetson Fire was assisted by crews from Levant, Carmel, and Etna Fire Departments.
The Maine State Police and Maine Forest Rangers also responded.
The investigation remains ongoing.
