Crash on I-81 in Lafayette closes highway for 2 hours

LAFAYETTE — State Police responded to a crash on Interstate 81 northbound at 5:55 a.m. on July 2.

A 2020 Chrysler minivan driven by Jacob E. Hagenbuch, 28, of Central Square, N.Y., struck the rear trailer of a 2024 Freightliner operated by Guybenson Louis Jean, 43, of Orlando, Fla.

The minivan caught fire, and flames spread to the trailer.

Hagenbuch exited the vehicle before the fire and was taken by ambulance to Upstate Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jean was unharmed.

Hagenbuch was ticketed for following too closely.

I-81 northbound between Tully (exit 67) and Lafayette (exit 73) was closed for about two hours for fire suppression and cleanup before reopening.
