BILLERICA — Three out-of-town juveniles have been identified as responsible for a threatening telephone call made to Billerica Memorial High School on Friday, police said.

An ongoing investigation determined that none of the three juveniles involved have access to weapons or the ability to act on the threat, Chief Roy Frost said.

The Billerica Police Department began investigating the threat called into the high school Thursday, June 5, at 1 p.m.

The school was placed into lockdown in accordance with pre-established procedures.

Students were sent home early as the investigation continued and an initial threat assessment was conducted.

Police increased their presence at all schools in town, building on the school resource officer already at Billerica Memorial High School.

The investigation continued into Thursday night.

Police identified three juveniles from Charlestown as being responsible for the threatening call.

Appropriate juvenile court charges will be pursued in coordination with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

“It’s unfortunate that this happened, but I am pleased to report that we have identified the juveniles behind this threatening call and determined that this was an attempted prank gone wrong,” Frost said.

“At no time were our students or our community in danger.”

Frost thanked Billerica Public Schools for their response to the incident.

He also thanked the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Special Response Team and police colleagues in Burlington, Bedford, Tewksbury, Wilmington and Chelmsford for their assistance.
