Colonie man arrested on child exploitation charges

LATHAM — State Police arrested a Colonie man on felony charges related to child sexual exploitation following a multi-agency investigation.

Christopher J. Appel, 55, was arrested May 14 for Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child, a class “D” felony, and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, a class “E” felony.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Appel’s Colonie residence on April 17 after receiving a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The investigation involved State Police of Latham, the Troop G Computer Crimes Unit, the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Appel was processed at SP Latham, issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Colonie Town Court on June 4, and released.
