SOUTHBRIDGE — A 9-year-old boy was struck by a pickup truck in a liquor store parking lot while tying his shoes Thursday morning, according to police.
At approximately 8:19 a.m. officers responded to Plaza Liquor located at 200 Mechanic Street after reports of a child being hit by a vehicle.
Police determined that the child, who was on his way to school with two other children, had stopped in the parking lot and was bent over tying his shoes when a 37-year-old male driving a Toyota Tacoma struck him.
The driver, traveling at a slow rate of speed, did not see the child before hitting him with the front bumper, causing the child to fall to the ground.
The child was then struck by the front passenger side tire, resulting in severe injuries to his hip and leg.
The injured child was transported to UMass Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Southbridge Police Department traffic officer is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Collision Reconstruction Team.
