ASHLAND — A Meredith man was taken into custody after driving the wrong way on Interstate 93.

At 9:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, State Troopers assigned to Troop F barracks received multiple calls about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-93 in Thornton.

Troopers located the vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla, as its driver continued to travel at a high rate of speed south in the northbound lanes in Ashland.

To prevent additional danger to the public, Troopers farther south formed a rolling roadblock to stop traffic on the interstate.

The driver of the Toyota then stopped in front of the Troopers, where he was taken into custody and identified as William Heffron Jr., 55, of Meredith.

During the roadside investigation, Troopers observed that Heffron showed signs of impairment.

It was also determined that Heffron was wanted for a warrant issued by the Laconia Police Department.

Heffron has been charged with nine counts of felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, aggravated DUI and reckless driving.

He remains held on preventative detention at the Grafton County Department of Corrections.

Troopers were assisted by members of the Ashland Police Department and the Holderness Police Department.

The case remains under investigation.
