TRESCOTT — A volunteer dive team recovered a body Sunday from the fishing vessel Sudden Impact, which had sunk off the coast of eastern Maine last month, authorities said.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources reported the body was found at about 7 a.m. inside the cabin of the vessel.

The identity of the deceased is pending formal identification by the medical examiner’s office.

Since the vessel’s location was determined on Jan. 19 in 160 feet of water near Moose River, the Maine Marine Patrol, local fishermen, and the Maine State Police/Marine Patrol Underwater Recovery Dive Team have been attempting to recover the body.

The Sudden Impact, manned by Chester Barrett and his son Aaron, fishermen from South Addison, went down on Jan. 18 while traveling from Edmunds to South Addison.

The search for the Barretts has been ongoing, with the family taking a leading role in the recovery efforts.

Marine Patrol Captain Colin MacDonald praised the exceptional skills of the volunteer divers, who faced challenging conditions, including near-zero air temperatures, strong tidal currents, and low underwater visibility.

The divers, recognized as some of the top wreck divers in the nation, utilized advanced equipment to reach the sunken vessel.

The divers, hailing from several northeastern states, were Chris Ogden, Richard Simon, Bob Foster, Mark Bowers, and Harold Moyers, with Eric Simon providing surface support.

The search continues for Aaron Barrett, the second individual aboard the Sudden Impact, who remains missing.

The Maine Marine Patrol will keep conducting periodic patrols in hopes of locating him.
