Molunkus explosion kills one, Fire Marshals Office investigates

MOLUNKUS — A fatal explosion that occurred on Friday, January 17, at approximately 3 p.m. has prompted an investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Fire investigators were called to 118 Aroostook Road in Molunkus after reports of an explosion that left one person dead.

Upon arrival, they conducted a post-blast investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

The deceased was identified as 66-year-old Kerry Holmes, the owner of the property where the explosion occurred.

Investigators learned that Holmes had been using a propane torch to thaw a frozen water tank on a commercial truck.

According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, the torch flame went out, allowing propane gas to accumulate around the tank.

A second torch, suspected to be the ignition source, was also being used by Holmes at the time.

Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing its investigation into the exact cause of the explosion.
