SOUTHINGTON — A 19-year-old Bridgeport man was arrested Thursday after he was found with a stolen vehicle and a firearm, leading to a pursuit and eventual apprehension by a police K9 unit, authorities said.

The Southington Police Department said Gionnie Canady was taken into custody after officers were alerted to a stolen white Honda Accord by automated license plate readers shortly after midnight.

The vehicle was located parked at the Holiday Inn Express at 54 Knotter Drive.

As police approached, Canady attempted to flee but lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

He then fled on foot, during which time he was seen reaching for his waistband.

Canady was apprehended by Southington Police K9 Kay a short distance away from the crash site.

A search of the area revealed a Glock 40 caliber handgun with a high-capacity magazine loaded with 33 rounds that Canady had discarded while fleeing.

Canady faces multiple charges including larceny of a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, and engaging police in pursuit.

He was held on a $600,000 bond, which included a warrant for a prior violation of probation.

He was scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court the morning of Jan. 16.

This arrest comes after Canady was apprehended a week and a half prior on similar charges but was released on bond.
